Northern Virginia trip
Dr. Samantha Hastings and I made the trip to Northern Virginia January 31 - February 2. I kept positive thoughts about traveling and snow but we actually flew between snows. On the return, when I flew into Charlotte, NC, there was snow around and I was told plenty of ice and sleet earlier.
The meetings with prospective cohort participants were fun. It was rewarding to see so many persons eager to take the professional challenge and commitment required to get an MLIS.
As all of you know, classes will begin fall 2007 and that means the first sessions will be toward the end of August. There will be an orientation in VA also. We (USC SLIS) will travel to you.
Since some of the contact information is now way down the blog postings, I want to remind you of the SLIS webpage: www.libsci.sc.edu. Look under For Future Students. Note the contacts in Student Services. As you are preparing your admissions packet, you may wish to speak with someone in that office.
If you haven't joined the listserv, I encourage you to do so. I have given the steps further down in the blog.
I would like to hear from you. Usually a question you have is one someone else has. What helps one helps all. :)

Hello, I am an employee of Fairfax County Public Libraries in Northern VA. It was nice to meet you and hear you speak about the MLIS program here in VA. I have almost completed my application. I noticed one of your posts menioned acceptance letters will be mailed out June 1. May we be notified of acceptance earlier if we complete the application now? Some scholarship opportunities require an acceptance letter by, say, April 15. Thanks for your advice.
Hi, it's me again with another question :)...
Some of us "future students" already have a Master's degree and already took the GRE or MAT prior to earning that Masters. The ETS only saves our scores for five years, so we can't get "official" scores sent by ETS. However, if the purpose of a GRE or MAT is to prove that someone is capable of succeeding in graduate level studies, doesn't the fact that someone has already graduated with an advanced degree from a well recognized university and with an excellent GPA already prove that? Must we take the tests again as if we were undergrads? Thanks for your thoughts.
1. Acceptance letters go out as completed application packets are reviewed.
2. As long as the GRE before your previous Master's is not too old! If you received that Master's over 10 years ago, you will need to show present proficiency.
Dust Bunny,
Contact me by email and let me know which new cohort member you are.
